At Business School, I studied iconic leaders like Richard Branson and Rupert Murdoch.

The lecturers were quick to imbue them with almost mythical power. Students learned the apex theory of organizations. It says everything follows the direction of a prophetic leader.

After a number of years in blue chip organisations, I have come to see that this is fallible.

Politicians think they direct countries, and businessmen lead companies. However, the world is far more random.

After all, who is the architect that directs termites to build a tower, or bees to make a honeycomb? The answer is that things evolve by trial and error …and at glacial pace.

The credit that mankind tries to claim for the evolutionary drift of events, is not merited. For example, 23 people invented the lightbulb before Thomas Edison. Who remembers any of them?

Life is chaotic and random. We seek to impose order and certainty. We cannot accept how unstructured our passage through the years would otherwise be. Maybe this explains our obedience to the Intelligent Design idea. It underpins all three monotheistic religions.

I believe Business Leaders and Politicians should be humble enough to recognise their limitations and stay out of the way !!!!!
